when we first discovered our
position as editors, and only
members of stosag '74 we said
"great", it would allow us to be
creative by revising the traditional
stosag to a contemporary pictorial
review, we would show those prime
moments and occasions that
depict what we all shared at
stockbridge and umass. we would
not build a partition segregating the
two year from the four year, we
would increase the color sections
and spread it throughout the book,
we refused to be frugal and yet
never to be wasteful.

there were new doors to open
and we would man a large staff to
open them all. we would not leave a
rock unturned, we would ask for
student opinion and be prepared to
thrust forth into the business of
making this the biggest, best and
most complete in quality and text
in stosag's history . . .

the people . . .

with his constant help, wit and unending attention, it is with
utmost pleasure and gratitude that by unanimous vote that
stosag '74 dedicate this volume to our director, dean, dr. John
William denison.

dr. denison was born in harrison, maine on april 20, 1927.
upon graduation from bridgton academy he enlisted in the navy
as a radar technician, following his discharge, he attended the
university of maine, where he got a b.s. in poultry science.

he then returned to the family farm in maine and after a
disastrous fire that ruined the farm, he then held jobs as sailor,
farm operator, wrestling coach, professional wrestler, deputy
sheriff and boy scout leader.

from 1952 to 1962 he was employed as a sales and service
manager for wirth more feeds and after earning a reputation of
the highest calibre, was appointed first regional poultry specialist
in 1961 through the university of massachusetts. he then began
his graduate study which led to a m.s. in agricultural and food
economics in 1965.

just recently, in 1970, he has completed the requirements for
an ed. d. degree in educational administration, the title of the
dissertation was, "a study of the predictive relationships between
admission criteria and academic achievement for the stockbridge
school of agriculture."

dr. denison has been very active in academic organizations
such as: animal science club advisor, university calendar
coordination board, placement and financial aid in the veterinary
and animal science departments, former advisor to stoso, a
member of the stockbridge advisory committee, among others,
his professional and honorary societies include alpha zeta, poultry
science, and phi kappa phi.

he has been an author and co-author of several publications
including bulletins on egg production, cage and floor plant sizes,
post-high school education in poultry science, and several others.

he has earned much more than this small award in script, but
foremost in heart.

for the class of 1 974

you are my class, we arrived together, you and i. you
came as freshmen and i as a freshman associate director, we
have grown together and learned together, i have learned
much in my two year stay at the stockbridge school, i hope
that you have, i know stockbridge has made a better person
of you. i hope it has of me.

you have now completed your work here, i have not. my
job will continue, there will be other classes coming,
growing, learning and leaving, i will love them too, learn
from them and miss them when they are gone, but it will
not be the same for me ever again, only with the class of
1974 have i shared the thrill and excitement of a new
beginning.

i dislike that old graduation cliche — you are the hope of
the future, of course you are! my question is, what kind of
hope will you be? will my future be in good hands? I
believe that it will, because you will continue to grow and
learn; to use good judgement in the discharge of your
coming responsibilities; to pursue right, not wrong, proudly
and fiercely; to show tolerance and compassion for the
weakness of others; and to persevere in the face of strong
opposition, these things i trust you to do.

with all my heart, i wish you the wisdom to live your
lives with honor and integrity, if you do this, you will like
yourselves, and if you like yourselves you will be happy and
successful.

my thoughts will be with you always, god bless you!
